Description
Departing from Belgrade city centre, the tour first heads to Avala Mountain, a popular local excursion spot. Visit the Monument of the Unknown Hero and optionally ascend Avala Tower, Belgrade’s highest viewpoint, for panoramic views of the city, forests, and gentle hills.
The journey then continues 70 km to Topola, located in the Šumadija wine region. This historically rich town is the birthplace of Karađorđe Petrović, leader of the First Serbian Uprising and founder of the Karađorđević dynasty. Topola was central to important events in the 18th to 20th centuries.
Explore the town and the memorial complex dedicated to Karađorđe, featuring his monument surrounded by the remains of Karađorđe Fortress (built 1811–1813), two former residences now museums, and the Church of the Birth of the Virgin Mary with notable iconostasis and frescoes.
Above Topola on Oplenac hill is the St. George Church complex, including the Karadjordjević Dynasty Mausoleum and the royal family's house. The white marble, five-domed church is a prime example of Serbian fresco art, decorated with over 40 million pieces of colored glass mosaics. The relics of the Karađorđević dynasty are kept in the crypt.
