Description
Begin at Petrovaradin Fortress, perched above the Danube river with views across Novi Sad. Historically a border between empires, its tunnels hold many secrets. The fortress now hosts the annual Exit music festival.
Explore Novi Sad’s oldest streets, showcasing baroque, classical, and neo-gothic buildings with colorful facades. Learn how locals persuaded Empress Maria Theresa to purchase the city in the 18th century, establishing its role as the cultural center known as “Serbian Athens.”
Next, visit Fruska Gora Mountain, formed as an island in the ancient Pannonian Sea and now Serbia’s oldest national park. Enjoy the natural scenery and visit Krušedol Monastery, an important Orthodox site.
Travel to Sremski Karlovci, following traces of the Serbian migration in the 17th century. Highlights include Serbia’s oldest high school, the “Four Lions” fountain, and the Orthodox cathedral.
The tour ends at a local winery where you will taste high-quality wines and Bermet, a spicy dessert wine unique to the region. This wine was favored by Empress Maria Theresa and is reputed to have been served on the Titanic.
