Description
Depart from Belgrade and travel to Smederevo, the former Serbian capital in the 15th century. The Smederevo Fortress was constructed rapidly at the confluence of the Jezava and Danube rivers by order of Serbian Despot Đurađ Branković. It remains the largest lowland fortress in Serbia.
Next, visit Viminacium Archaeological Park, once the capital of the Roman province Moesia Superior. Here you can see busts of Constantine the Great and 17 other Roman emperors born in Serbia. The park features a mosaic-decorated floor and a paleontological section housing a mammoth skeleton found 27 meters underground, dating back one million years.
Continue to Golubac Fortress, built in the 14th century on a rock overlooking the Danube at the entrance to the Iron Gates gorge. This fortress has been controlled by Hungarians, Serbs, Turks, and Austrians but was never conquered due to its strong walls and strategic location. Positioned where the 6-kilometer-wide Danube narrows dramatically, Golubac controlled navigation along the river.
