Description
This tour begins in Belgrade and travels east along the Danube River toward Đerdap Gorge, marking the border between Serbia and Romania. It covers dramatic river landscapes and significant historical sites rarely visited by Western travelers.
Day 2 includes a visit to Viminacium, Serbia’s largest excavated Roman city, the medieval Golubac Fortress, and the Neolithic Lepenski Vir settlement, known for its ancient sculptures. On Day 3, enjoy a two-and-a-half-hour boat cruise through the Kazani canyon narrows and past Trajan’s Table rock carving in the Iron Gates.
Heading south on Day 4, the route passes natural stone bridges in Vratna Gorge before reaching Rajačke Pimnice, where you stay overnight in traditional wine cellars and enjoy a local wine dinner. Day 5 visits the imperial Roman palace of Felix Romuliana before continuing toward Niš, Serbia’s third-largest city and the possible birthplace of Emperor Constantine the Great.
Day 6 is a full exploration of Niš, including the Skull Tower, Crveni Krst concentration camp, and the fortress and marketplace areas. The final day explores the Resava Valley with visits to the medieval monasteries of Ravanica and Manasija and Resavska Cave before returning to Belgrade.
This itinerary connects ancient civilizations, natural wonders, and local culture, providing a comprehensive experience of eastern Serbia’s layered history.

- What to Bring: Comfortable walking shoes for uneven terrain, warm clothing for Resavska Cave (around 7°C), modest clothing for monastery visits (shoulders and knees covered), sun protection, reusable water bottle, camera or smartphone, and a small daypack for excursions.
- Fitness Level: Moderate; includes light hiking and walking on uneven terrain. No technical hiking required.
- Accessibility: Not suitable for wheelchair users.
- Climate & Best Time to Visit: Spring (April–June) and autumn (September–October) are recommended. Summer is warm with dramatic gorge scenery.
