REQUIEM FOR L. The closing performance of 52nd Bitef will be Requiem for L. which had its world premiere at the beginning of 2018, and has already been shown at several big international festivals, always with huge success. The performance, supported by several significant European co-producers and played by the famous Belgic troupe les ballets C de la B, is based on Fabrizio Kassol’s music score which ingeniously combines Mozart’s Requiem, African music and some other music traditions. Subsequently, that composition was staged by Alain Platel, one of the leading world choreographers, who thus created a minimalistic but also monumental funeral ritual which connects various traditions, but is performed almost exclusively by African musicians. The ritual seems to be dedicated to an unknown white woman whose last hours have been recorded and are screened in the background. Although this is an intimate, tender and poignant story of dying, the performance Requiem for L. assumes – given the fact that it has been deliberately chosen to close the festival – a political connotation: in the context of 52nd Bitef, it becomes a requiem for the world, whose destruction, caused by right-wing movements, authoritarian regimes, the suppression of democratic values and human rights, we will have followed in the preceding performances.
